HISTORY AND SCIENCE Potsdam This film was made in 1979 when Potsdam was located in East Germany, just over the wall from Berlin. Narrated by David Binder, who spent 15 years as a New York Times correspondent in both East and West Germany, the film gives us the opportunity to have a first-hand view of life in an East German town that played an important role in Germany's history. Potsdam was the residence of the Prussian kings and later the German emperors. Its Garrison Church was the location of Hindenburg's transfer of the power of state to Hitler in 1933. The victorious Allies met in Potsdam in 1945 for the Potsdam Conference after the conclusion of World War II. During the decades that followed Potsdam was a headquarter for the Soviet army as well as the East German military. |
